Wizz Air Adds Aircraft, Expands Routes in Rome

Airlines & Airports

The airline, already the largest operator at Rome Fiumicino, will deploy its 14th Airbus A321neo to the base, enabling nearly 500,000 additional seats annually and creating more than 400 jobs, including over 50 direct positions.

This move follows a series of expansions by Wizz Air in Rome, including the recent launch of routes to Glasgow, Bordeaux, and Brasov. Now, the airline is boosting flight frequencies on five popular destinations:

  • London Luton: from 12 to 18 weekly

  • Malaga: from 9 to 14 weekly

  • Valencia: from 12 to 14 weekly

  • Tel Aviv: from 10 to 14 weekly

  • Sharm El-Sheikh: from 11 to 12 weekly (winter only)

The airline says the decision comes in direct response to growing passenger demand and reflects Rome's role as a strategic hub in its European network.

Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Wizz Air’s Corporate Communications Manager, said: “The addition of our 14th aircraft and increased frequencies confirm Rome Fiumicino’s importance in our network. This investment supports our mission to offer affordable travel while creating local jobs and strengthening the economy.”

Wizz Air’s expanded presence in Rome follows Vueling’s downsizing at the airport. The carrier has adjusted its schedule to fill the gap, increasing service to Alicante, London, Barcelona, Ibiza, Paris Orly, and more, while launching a pilot recruitment drive in October.

Wizz Air operates 63 routes from Fiumicino to 25 countries, making it the largest Italian base in the airline's network. Across Italy, it flies more than 240 routes from 22 airports, with 26 A321neo aircraft based in the country.

In the first nine months of 2025, Wizz Air flew nearly 5 million passengers through Fiumicino—up 5.4% year-on-year—with a 99.8% flight completion rate.

The move is part of Wizz Air’s broader €14 billion investment plan focused on improving the passenger experience and growing its network sustainably.
