United Airlines introduces Relax Row with couch-style seating in economy
United Airlines has announced the launch of its new “Relax Row”, an innovative seating concept designed to provide greater comfort for economy passengers on long-haul flights.
The new configuration transforms a row of three standard economy seats into a couch-like space after takeoff, allowing passengers to stretch out, rest or sleep more comfortably. The seats feature adjustable leg rests that fold up to create a flat, mattress-style surface.
Passengers booking the Relax Row will receive additional amenities, including a custom mattress pad, extra pillows, a blanket and, for families, a children’s travel kit and plush toy.
The product is aimed at families, couples and solo travellers seeking more space without upgrading to premium cabins.
United plans to introduce the Relax Row in 2027 and roll it out across more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft by 2030. Each aircraft is expected to include up to 12 Relax Row sections, positioned between standard economy and premium economy cabins.
The airline said the concept is unique in North America and forms part of its broader strategy to enhance passenger experience across all cabin classes.
The announcement follows other family-focused initiatives by United, including guaranteed family seating, dedicated children’s meals and expanded inflight entertainment options.
