Ukraine and Russia agree on humanitarian corridors

Ukraine and Russia agree on humanitarian corridors

During the second round of negotiations in Belarus, both delegations from the two countries have acknowledged the need for humanitarian corridors for civilians.

After the recent meeting in the Belarusian city of Brest, Vladimir Medinsky, the leader of the Russian delegation commented for the media:

“We have thoroughly discussed three points – military, international and humanitarian, and the third one is an issue of a future political regulation of the conflict. Both positions are clear and written down. We managed to agree on some of them, but the key thing that we have reached an agreement on today was a matter of rescuing civilians who found themselves in a military clash zone. Russian and Ukrainian defence ministries agreed on providing humanitarian corridors for civilians and on a possible temporary ceasefire in areas where evacuation is happening.”

The negotiations between the two delegations lasted for two hours and a half. However, except for agreeing on humanitarian corridors, the talks didn’t reach any desired results. A third round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials is expected in the “nearest future.”

"The second round of negotiations is over. Unfortunately, the results Ukraine needs are not yet achieved. There is a solution only for the organization of humanitarian corridors," senior Ukrainian official Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted after the gathering.

More than 2.000 civilians died since the war started on February 24. According to the UN Refugee Agency 874.000 people have exited Ukraine so far, while fleeing to neighbouring countries in an attempt to save their lives.
