Turkish tram factory to be opened by Siemens
Announcements
The German manufacturer's new assembly factory for light rail vehicles in the Turkish city of Gebze near Istanbul will begin production in 2018
On October 20, Siemens announced a €30 million investment to build a new tram factory in Turkey. The first vehicles are expected to exit the production line in 2018. The news concurs with the Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Ministry's announcement about 6.500 urban rail vehicles to be built over the next eight years.
It is expected that the new facility ensures a more stable place for Siemens in the tram market, by ownership of factory and local supply chain in Turkey.
According to the German company, “by localizing manufacturing and the supply chain in Turkey, the company expects even better chances for winning tenders as well as substantial cost advantages for international orders.”
Siemens declared for Railway Gazette International that it welcomes the “local know-how and expertise” of Turkish suppliers, as in the past it worked with Turkish supplier Durmazlar on the Silkworm tram to deliver modern vehicle platforms.
Siemens partners with local Turkish manufacturers to bid for project's contracts. Meanwhile, the company's urban rail transportation influx is experiencing a 3 per cent annual growth, despite very competitive lower prices of suppliers from Eastern Europe and China.
Jochen Eickholt, head of Siemens’ rail business, declared: “Our Avenio series trams have already proven themselves in some countries.
“We are now aiming at building on this success in the global market. We have the best chances of succeeding here with a factory in Turkey.”
