Along the Ayung River and neaby the village of Ubud, in Bali, Indonesia, there is an a school led by an unique concept not only in this part of the world but everywhere on the planet. Called The Green School, this private institution offers a study opportunity for a vaste range of children, from pre-kindergarten to high-school. Its secret concept? Sustainability.

This amazing idea was designed by school founder, husband and wife John and Cynthia Hardy back in September 2008, and also involved 98 stundents. The Hardy family were inspired by a reading of All Wagstaff’s Three Springs  work, a document related to an educational village community and also by the famous Al Gore documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.

The campus was build in accordance with the know-how and learning received from practicing permaculture. This is the reason why students are also welcomed and encouraged to grow an organic garden. Renewable resources are the foundation of the building structure, as Bali can be a great source of bamboo, grass and also traditional mud walls. The bamboo resources also inspired the students and the founders in order to create a special structure of 60 meter long, The Heart of School. By exploiting the building potential of bamboo, they managed to construct this with 2500 bamboo poles.

Green School was awarded the 2012 "Greenest School on Earth" award by the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council. The school was a finalist for the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
