Storm delays flights at Palma Airport, no cancellations

Travelers flying via Palma de Mallorca Airport today, Thursday, July 10, are facing widespread delays after a severe summer storm hit the island early this morning. Heavy rain, lightning, and thunder led to air traffic restrictions, triggering a yellow weather alert issued by Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
At the height of the storm, Enaire, the authority managing Spanish airspace, limited take-offs and landings for safety, significantly disrupting flight operations at Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport.
No cancellations, but widespread delays
While no flights have been cancelled so far, nearly all departures have been delayed, and incoming flights are experiencing knock-on effects. Poor visibility and hazardous conditions during the early hours caused slowdowns in aircraft movements. As the storm moves eastward toward Menorca, the lingering impact is expected to ripple through the day’s flight schedule.
Inside the terminal, the heavy rainfall led to leaks in the roof, with maintenance crews deploying buckets to manage the situation. Several areas have been temporarily closed off to ensure passenger safety.
Weather outlook and travel advice
The weather is expected to gradually improve throughout the day. According to AEMET, skies should clear from mid-morning, with temperatures rising to 32 °C, although isolated showers may still occur in the afternoon. The storm also brought relief from the recent heatwave.
Travelers flying today are strongly advised to check flight status directly with their airlines and allow extra time for airport transfers. The storm has also caused localized traffic congestion in parts of Mallorca, which may further impact journeys.
