Southwest Introduces Assigned Seating and New Options
Southwest Airlines has introduced a major update to its boarding and seating policies by launching assigned seating across its flights, ending the decades-long open-seating tradition that distinguished the airline since its founding.
Under the new system, customers can select their seats at the time of booking for flights departing on or after January 27, 2026, giving them greater control over their travel experience. The change also brings new seat options, including Extra Legroom and Preferred seats, available through different fare bundles.
Southwest’s updated boarding process introduces boarding groups 1 through 8, replacing the previous A/B/C system. Passengers who purchase premium seating or hold elite status will be placed in earlier groups, while others will board based on fare and seat type.
The airline says the move responds to customer demand for more choice and predictability, as well as industry trends that favour pre-booked seating options. Extra Legroom seats, positioned towards the front of the cabin, offer additional space and earlier access to bin storage.
Southwest has also introduced new fare bundles that combine different seat selection rights with other perks, allowing passengers to tailor their experience based on preferences and budget.
The shift marks one of the most significant changes in Southwest’s customer experience in recent years, as the carrier aligns more closely with traditional airline seating practices while maintaining its distinct brand identity.
