South Africa: water crisis triggers travel warnings

News

The State Department has issued an updated travel advisory for South Africa, as the capital city of Cape Town is expected to have no more water starting Day Zero, as in May 11th.

The Level 2 warning was issued by the State Department on the 9th of February, as South Africa is considered a dangerous destination due to increased crime and imminent water crisis.

Currently, Cape Town and the Western Cape Province are going through a significant drought. Meanwhile, authorities here have restricted water use to 50 liters per person daily, due to the fact that the water reserves are expected to end on critical “Day Zero”.

Moreover, crime, such as violence, robbery, rape and theft are taking toll over Cape Town every evening. Consequently, visitors traveling to South Africa are advised to avoid lonely walks, as well as shady areas in the city.

On the other hand, despite of “Day Zero” imminence, the representatives of Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SASTA) stated that “there will be available water for tourists’ and locals’ critical needs,” as the capital of Cape Town needs its tourism sector to remain functional, meaning hotels, restaurants, attractions and the Central Business District will not have the water shut off.

Kensington Place, Cape Grace, Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, One&Only Cape Town are a few of the luxury hotels here that have implemented water restrictions in order to limit the wasting of resources.
