The new seats were presented for the first time at a media launch in Singapore. They are the result of an investment of US$80 million that took two years to be completed.

Each seat welcomes customers with a contemporary and sophisticated design featuring a width of either 18.5 or 19.5 inches that varies with the aircraft type, with a seat pitch of 38 inches and an 8-inch recline.

Passengers can look forward to a marvelous in-flight experience with a sleek 13.3-inch full HD monitor – the largest in its class – and active noise-cancelling headphones.

Among other features, customers can enjoy a full leather finishing, two USB ports, calf-rest and foot-bar for every seat, individual in-seat power supply and reading light, cocktail table and more storage for depositing personal items.

Mr Mak Swee Wah, Singapore Airlines Executive Vice President Commercial, said: " Premium Economy has been requested by many of our customers and we strongly believe that what we are delivering something that will exceed their expectations."

"The new cabin is the result of two years of work, which included extensive research and focus group studies involving both passengers and design partners. Our Premium Economy Class will offer customers more in-flight amenities and comfort. We consider this new cabin will be a 'great new way to fly', especially when considering it will be complemented by Singapore Airlines' exceptional and renowned service."

Premium Economy Class will offer an extensive choice of food and beverage, including the Premium Economy Book - the Cook service, allowing passengers to order a selection of main courses in advance. Customers will also be offered a generous baggage allowance of 35kg.

Priority check-in and baggage handling, with a generous baggage allowance of 35kg, will be offered to customers. Members of the KrisFlyer frequent-flyer programme will also receive 10% more miles when they fly in Premium Economy Class.

Premium Economy Class will be gradually initiated on the first 20 Airbus A350s, 19 Airbus A380s and 19 Boeing 777-300ERs. It will enter commercial service on 9 August 2015 on Singapore Airlines' route to Sydney, followed by other destinations such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai, Delhi, Mumbai, Frankfurt, Zurich, London and New York.
