Since January, over 26,000 individuals from Türkiye have sought asylum in the EU

News

Since the beginning of the year, the EU authorities revealed that the number Turkish citizens who have applied for asylum within the EU has remained high.

More than 26,000 applications were submitted.

SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that according to the authorities, this high number of asylum requests filed last year puts Turkey on fifth place after Syria, Afghanistan and Venezuela.

The European Union Agency for Asylum, which is the agency responsible for asylum applications in the EU+, has recently also shared information on the number Turkish citizens who have applied for asylum.

EUAA's most recent data pertains to the month March. The Agency says that the number Turks seeking asylum has increased significantly.

According to EUAA in March 2023 citizens of Turkey filed 5,900 applications. This is more than double the number of applications submitted in March 2022, even though the recognition rate was declining.

5 447 applications were filed for the first time in March 2023. The remaining 445 were repeat applications.

In February 2023 the number of asylum requests filed by Turkish nationals was lower. The EU countries received 4,840 new applications and 326.

EUAA shows that Turkey citizens filed more applications in January 2023 than they did in March. There were 5,959 new applications.

The Agency stated that in addition to what was mentioned above, the majority of the asylum requests were filed in Germany. Germany has a large number of outstanding applications.

The recognition rate of Turks has fallen from 43 percent in March 2022, to 28 percent in March 2023. This means that less people have been granted asylum in the EU than the same period in last year.

Turkey nationals continue to submit a large number of visa requests, in addition to a high volume of asylum claims.

Turkey, despite facing visa problems in Schengen, has become the leading source of Schengen Visa applications. Its citizens filed over 700,000 visa applications last year.

Schengen Visa Statistics data shows that Turkey is ahead of Russia. This same data shows that Turks made the most visa applications in German embassies and consulates - 223,699.

Germany was followed by Greece with 164 829 visa requests and France with 115 114 visa requests from Turkish citizens.
