Schiphol selects new architects for major airport redesign
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has selected a new team of in-house architects to deliver its long-term redevelopment programme under the Schiphol Master Plan.
The initiative aims to improve passenger experience, increase space and comfort, and restore Schiphol’s position among Europe’s top hub airports. Central to the plan is a unified design vision that prioritises simplicity, clarity and a consistent, sustainable architectural style across the airport.
Schiphol intends to award contracts to four key partners: KAAN Architects, LVZJA (Luis Vidal + architects and ZJA), Architectenbureau Paul de Ruiter, and Beacon (Benthem Crouwel Architects and NACO).
KAAN Architects will act as lead architect, overseeing the overall design vision. LVZJA will be responsible for multiple key areas, including Schiphol Plaza, lounges, piers, gates and landside facilities. Paul de Ruiter will focus on departure halls, baggage areas and security zones, while Beacon will provide technical and aviation consultancy.
The redesign marks a return to Schiphol’s original “one terminal” philosophy, known for its compact layout, efficient passenger flow and clear wayfinding. Over time, rapid growth has diluted this identity, and the new plan seeks to restore simplicity and coherence throughout the airport.
Major renovations are planned across the terminal, with a strong focus on functionality, passenger comfort and operational efficiency. The programme also emphasises modular construction, cost control and long-term sustainability.
The architectural overhaul is expected to create a more recognisable and intuitive airport environment, enhancing both the traveller experience and the airport’s operational performance.
