Schiphol Begins Major Taxiway Renewal Project

Airlines & Airports

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has launched a major infrastructure project to renew sections of taxiways A and B, two critical routes used by aircraft to move between airport gates and runways. The work will take place between March and June 2026 as part of a broader effort to replace aging airport infrastructure.

he project focuses on the stretch between connections A21 and A25, which has been in continuous use for more than two decades. Over time, wear has affected the asphalt surface as well as supporting systems such as drainage, lighting and electrical cabling, making large-scale renewal necessary to ensure safe and efficient ground operations.

During the works, approximately 65,000 square metres of asphalt will be replaced. The airport will also upgrade rainwater drainage systems, restore surrounding areas, install about 32 kilometres of new electrical cabling and renew taxiway lighting and signage. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Dutch construction company Heijmans.

To reduce disruption for passengers and nearby communities, the project has been divided into two phases. Work on taxiway B is scheduled from 9 March to 12 April, while taxiway A will undergo maintenance between 4 May and 26 June. The break between phases is designed to avoid the busy May holiday travel period.

Schiphol is also combining the taxiway project with other maintenance activities at the airport, including routine work on the Polderbaan and Zwanenburgbaan runways. By coordinating these projects, the airport aims to limit additional disruption to flight operations during the construction period.
