Schiphol Airport Witnesses Significant Passenger and Flight Increases in January 2024

Airlines & Airports

Schiphol Airport reports significant increases in passenger numbers and flights in January 2024, with notable growth in travel to the UK, Spain, and the US, alongside a rise in cargo volume.

In January 2024, Schiphol Airport experienced a remarkable surge in air travel, with nearly 4.6 million passengers navigating through its terminals. This marked a substantial 17% increase from January 2023 and an impressive 83% rise compared to the same period in 2022. The airport's connectivity to key destinations like the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States played a significant role in this growth.

The data reveals a detailed breakdown of passenger traffic, with almost 2.7 million travelers either departing from or arriving at Schiphol, alongside nearly 1.9 million passengers who transferred at the airport. The unique counting method for transfer passengers, where they are counted twice—once upon arrival and once at departure—resulted in almost 950,000 transfer passengers being recorded.

European destinations remained the most popular, attracting 3 million passengers, while 1.4 million travelers flew to or from intercontinental destinations outside Europe. The United Kingdom led the list of top destinations, followed by Spain, the United States, Italy, and Turkey.

Flight operations also saw a significant uptick, with 35,050 flights recorded in January 2024, representing a 17% increase from 2023 and a 34% rise from 2022. Of these flights, 27,922 were destined for European locations, and 7,128 were intercontinental.

Despite the overall growth in passenger and flight numbers, cargo flights experienced a slight decline of 1% compared to the previous year. However, the total cargo volume transported showed a positive trajectory, with 118,253 tonnes moved, marking a 14% increase from January 2023.

This robust performance underscores Schiphol's vital role in global air travel, serving as a key hub for passengers and cargo alike. The airport's continuous growth reflects the recovering demand for air travel and its strategic importance in connecting Europe with the rest of the world.
