Rome Fiumicino Eases Liquid Rules from July 26, 2025

Airlines & Airports

Travellers flying through Rome Fiumicino Airport will soon enjoy easier hand luggage rules, as the airport adopts the European Commission’s updated liquid regulations beginning Saturday, July 26, 2025.

Thanks to next-generation EDS C3 scanners, passengers can now carry Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs) in containers up to 2 liters without removing them from their bags during security checks.

For containers larger than 2L, only empty ones may be carried in hand luggage; filled containers must be packed in checked baggage.

Laptops and other electronic devices can also remain inside carry-ons during screening, streamlining the security process.

However, the old 100ml liquid limit remains in place for flights to the USA and Israel, as these routes still use traditional X-ray machines. In those cases, liquids must be packed in a resealable plastic bag (max 1L per passenger) and presented separately at security. The same applies to transit passengers from non-EU countries, except those arriving from Canada, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, or the United States.

Liquids for medical purposes, special diets, or baby food remain permitted in hand luggage, subject to separate screening.

The update marks a significant step towards streamlined airport security for millions of passengers travelling through Fiumicino, aligning Italy with broader EU efforts to modernize screening procedures.
