Reservations now available for the Viking Ship Tour 2018

News

Do you fancy going on a tour in a Viking Ship? In case your answer is ‘yes’, then you should know that reservations for the 2018 Viking ship tour in North America are now available.

Draken Harald Hårfagre is the largest Viking ship in the world that is fully active and that will go on a new US East Coast in 2018. The announcement was made a few days ago and reservations are now open to the public.

After the great success the Draken had in 2016, when it managed to cross the North Atlantic Ocean, they decided to relive the experience and engage once again in another epic, unique and mystical exploration in the wake of Leif Ericsson, one of the most famous Viking explorers.

The greatest advantage of this tour is that it gives you a realistic image on the Viking age of exploration, on how people used to travel and explore the world back then. This is why people described the Draken Harald Hårfagre as a pillar of both education and culture.

The Draken Harald Hårfagre project started back in 2008, when Sigurd Aase, a Norwegian entrepreneur, decided to start building the greatest Viking ship that was ever built in modern times. He sought the most reputable historians specialized in Scandinavian history and the most skilled ship builders and gathered all together for one purpose – to create a seaworthy ship that resembled the Viking ships from centuries ago.

This year, there will be 16 stopovers included in the tour, all of them from the East Coast of America. Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Washington D.C. are only a few examples of ports where the ship will stop by. However, the complete list of all stopover ports, as well as the dates of the tour will be announced by the end of this spring 2018.

Björn Ahlander, the captain of the ship, said that “Each Draken stopover offers a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for visitors to relive history in a way never before experienced. We offer guests the opportunity to not only marvel at this stunning Viking ship on guided deck tours – but also to interact with the crew while they share their personal experiences of the thrill, fear, and exhilaration felt from having relived one of the world's most mythological sea voyages – the first transatlantic crossing and the Viking discovery of the New World, more than a thousand years ago.”

In 2016, the starting point was Haugesund, Norway, and the tour continued through the Shetland Islands, and had ended the journey in Mystic Seaport, CT, where she is still docked. In its journey, the ship stopped by Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Newfoundland, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

35 people from all over the world, both men and women, representing a range of age, background, culture and nationality form the crew of the Draken. Those interested in this once in a lifetime experience should know they have the opportunity to be on board of the largest Viking Ship by applying for both volunteer and professional crew positions.
