The Hotels that Earned Forbes' Five-Star Rating for 2016

Hospitality

The highly anticipated star ratings were revealed Monday, highlighting some of the best accommodations from around the globe

The 58th annual list features 42 new five-star rated hotels, 100 new four-star properties and 57 new hotels in the recommended category, bringing Forbes Travel Guide's total to 154 five-star hotels, 410 four-star hotels and 159 recommended hotels.

The 154 five-star rated hotels are the most in the guide's nearly six-decade history.

Five-star rated hotels are defined by the Guide as "outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities."
"These properties set an unimpeachable standard of excellence in hospitality," Forbes Travel Guide CEO Gerard J. Inzerillo said in a statement.
Four Seasons was by far the biggest winner in 2016, landing six new five-star rated properties. With Four Seasons hotels in Florence, Italy; Geneva, Switzerland; Hangzhou, China; Papagayo, Costa Rica; Paris, France and Whistler, Canada being recognized, 2016 signals the first time the company has had six hotels achieve five-star status in a single year.

Meanwhile, Paris, Italy, Mexico and the Caribbean also fared extremely well in 2016.

The French capital debuted a whopping nine five-star hotels, while Italy saw eight hotels recognized as five-star properties, four of which are located in Rome. Florence and Milan were also represented.

Mexico also boasts half a dozen five-star hotels on the 2016 list.

In addition to Geneva, Paris, Rome and Florence, other breakthrough destinations in 2016 include the French Riviera, England's Home Counties, Berlin, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Grand Cayman, Nevis, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, St. Martin, Cancun, San Miguel de Allende, Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, Los Cabos, Iguazu Falls, Hangzhou and Taipei.
