South Africa’s top ski racing talents will descend on Rhodes and Tiffindell Ski Resort to compete in the national highlight of the winter alpine skiing season. From there a group of skiers will proceed to Australia together with our Olympic hopeful, Sive Speelman (2012 Youth Winter Olympian), and compete in a number of FIS (International Ski Federation) races, in order for Sive to gain enough FIS points to qualify for the Olympics.

For the first time in South Africa, a black junior athlete and member of the Ikhephu Ski Pups Junior Development Club, has a great chance of qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to be held in Sochi (Russia). Sive Speelman hails from Barkly East and has trained with the Ikhephu Ski Pups at Tiffindell Ski Resort since he was 8 years old. He will be in action on Saturday, the 20th July in the Slalom event and on Sunday, the 21st of July in the exciting Giant Slalom competition.

Flying down the slopes, hot on his heels will be Alex Heath (ex triple Olympian), Tsotane Dywili and Laura Bauer who also represented South Africa at the 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held in Schladming (Austria) early this year.

Tiffindell has a development program for budding skiers from the local areas and currently hosts 4 schools who have been skiing one day a week as part of their school sports activities. Skiers learn the basics of skiing and then progress to race training.

Excitement is running high as the 2nd Tiffindell Race Series, to be held on Tuesday 16th July, will be an elimination race where local youngsters will be battling it out to get into one of 75 spots in the SA Nationals.

The 2013 First Ascent South Africa National Alpine Ski Championship event is open to all South African skiers. The standard of skiing is getting higher every year. Anyone wishing to enter the Championships should contact Mariaan at mertounfarm@vodamail.co.za or Christina at cedevilliers@xsinet.co.za Accommodation is still available for racers and spectators alike - phone Tiffindell reservations at (011) 781 2620.

Tiffindell Ski Resort General Manager, Maarten den Heyer says, although this season has been unusually warm and dry, there will be good snow for the event. Snow Sports South Africa thanks their sponsors First Ascent, Tiffindell Ski Resort and the Ikhephu Ski Pups Development Club for hosting the event.
