Airlines At Dublin Airport To Receive Discount For Adopting 'Low Emissions' Approach

News

Dublin Airport Operator DAA announced a new incentive program to encourage airlines that operate aircraft with lower CO2 emissions.

Airports plan to offer airlines that fly more efficient aircraft "low emission discounts" on aeronautical fees, while "high emissions" aircraft operators will be charged higher charges.

DAA announced that it would "shortly begin consultation" on the plan, which includes a new 25% discount on all charges on the runway for airlines using the "most environmentally-friendly aircraft at any time of day". The airport is hoping that the new incentive-based program will be implemented within the next six month.

This is the latest step in DAA’s environmental charging policy, which already includes higher charges for airlines that operate noisier aircraft during nighttime hours.

DAA stated that it expects carriers to receive discounts totaling more than EUR30,000,000 on published charges in this year, with Ryanair and Aer Lingus "receiving the largest share".

Kenny Jacobs is the CEO of DAA. He added, "We are acutely conscious of the magnitude of the task to achieve the government's goal of a 51 percent reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions at airports by 2030. We will be on our way towards our ultimate goal, which is achieving zero emissions by 2050.

"We are fully committed to delivering on these targets while in parallel, working alongside aviation stakeholders and our airline partners to support the sector's transition to a more sustainable model for the future and addressing our Scope 3 emissions."

DAA's carbon emissions were reduced by 24% at Dublin Airport and 38% at Cork Airport, both of which it operates. The company achieved this through energy management, LED upgrades and a fleet-replacement programme.

DAA is working on a new ESG reporting standard to be implemented in 2024.

"Following on from the North Runway development, we aim to progress at pace our planned EUR1.9 billion capital investment programme in sustainability projects, a refurbished terminal, new piers, gates, stand and transfer facilities that will ensure a compelling service and lasting legacy for future generations of air travellers in and out of Ireland," said Jacobs.
