Prepay Checked Bags to Save Time and Money
American Airlines has rolled out a range of new digital features designed to make checking bags easier, faster and more cost-effective for travelers.
Passengers can now prepay for up to three checked bags at the time of booking through the airline’s website or mobile app, eliminating the need to wait until check-in at the airport. Those who prepay online can also make confirmed same-day changes to their bag selections without speaking to an agent, improving flexibility and reducing service delays.
If travel plans change, prepaid bag purchases are automatically refunded either as a travel credit or back to the original payment method, depending on the circumstances. Travelers can also redeem travel credits when buying standalone bags online, giving more choice and convenience in managing costs before departure.
For customers who prepay their checked bags, American has enhanced airport service options, including Express Bag Tags that can be printed at self-service kiosks—around 100 of which have been installed at 16 airports.
American is adjusting its second checked bag fees for flights booked on or after Feb. 18. At the airport, the second bag will cost $50, while prepaying online or via the app reduces the fee to $45. There are no changes to the fee for the first checked bag.
The updates are part of a broader effort by the airline to give flyers more control over their travel experience through enhanced self-service tools.
