Paralyzed Veterans Of America Launches New Programme

News

The Health and Wellness program, run by PVA's Sports and Recreation Department, has launched on January 31 with a range of six-week online seminars.

Topics from physical activity to mindfulness will be addressed during the workshops. While live sessions will be added throughout the year, all of the courses will be accessible on-demand so that participants may focus on their emotional and physical health whenever it's most comfortable for them.

"PVA's new Health and Wellness program is designed to foster inclusivity and bring greater awareness to the incredible benefits that physical activity and mental resilience provide to a person's overall health.

“What's more, our online platform will increase accessibility and cultivate a community of encouragement and support for the disability community," commented Charles Brown, PVA National President.

Two of the first three courses in PVA's Health and Wellness program's Winter series are geared specifically at women. Paralyzed veterans, their loved ones, and carers may attend any of these classes at no cost:

Beginning on January 31st, Vinyasa Yoga for Adaptive Athletes will be offered. Registered Yoga Teacher Corynne Smith leads the group, and she is well-versed in modifying the poses and stretches typically practised in yoga to help learners of varying physical capacities. Strength training, flexibility training, balance training, relaxation training, and stress reduction are the primary goals of this women-only class.

After that, on February 1st, Health and Wellness Coaching will begin. Dr. Audrey Lee, a former yoga and nutrition teacher for PVA, leads this women-only session in which they discuss issues including relaxation techniques, eating properly, getting enough sleep, and setting and meeting health and wellness goals for the year.

Finally, on February 2nd, Strength Training for Adaptive Athletes will be introduced as part of PVA's Health and Wellness programme. Regina Stone, an Adaptive Strength and Conditioning Trainer, will be in charge of the session. Participants will learn how to use hand weights, resistance bands, and functional motions to increase their strength, endurance, and flexibility via a series of adaptive fitness exercises.

"We couldn't be more excited about this new program.

“Utilizing technology maximizes PVA's ability to reach more of our members and the disability community at large in rural and diverse locations around the U.S. This access alone will help relieve feelings of isolation and extended periods of inactivity," added Fabio Villarroel, Director of PVA's Sports and Recreation Department.

More programmes including cardio, dancing, and conditioning will be introduced at PVA throughout the year. After the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, PVA shifted its focus from in-person to online programming due to extensive travel restrictions and company closures, inspiring the creation of the PVA Health and Wellness programme which is currently expanding its online offerings to capitalise on its growing popularity by adding PVA-branded in-studio recordings, expert instructors, on-demand course catalogues, and more exciting material.
