Oakland International Airport Announces Completion of Taxiway W Rehabilitation Phase 1

akland International Airport completes phase 1 of the Taxiway W Rehabilitation project, enhancing the departure route for aircraft and setting the stage for phase 2 improvements.
Oakland International Airport (OAK), a key aviation hub in California, has successfully completed the first phase of its ambitious Taxiway W Rehabilitation project. Initiated in August 2023, this significant upgrade aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of one of the airport's primary taxiways. The project reached substantial completion by late 2023, marking a significant milestone in OAK's ongoing efforts to improve its infrastructure.
The completion of phase 1 involved the rehabilitation of approximately 1,900 feet of Taxiway W, which is crucial for the departure of most aircraft utilizing the runway. This phase of the project was carried out by AECOM, who led the design, and DeSilva Gates Construction, responsible for the construction work. The project was funded with a total of 28.7 million USD, including 19.2 million USD from FAA grant funding through the Airport Improvement Program.
To ensure minimal disruption to airport operations, OAK introduced innovative solutions during this phase. The use of jet blast deflectors allowed construction teams to work safely in proximity to active aircraft, optimizing construction timelines while maintaining the airfield's functionality. Additionally, a temporary bypass taxiway was activated around the construction site, ensuring continuous access to Runway 12-30 for aircraft and airlines throughout the project duration.
Looking ahead, OAK is preparing for the launch of phase 2, slated to begin later this year. This next phase will focus on rehabilitating approximately 5,000 feet of Taxiway W, targeting both the primary arrival route and the departure route used during adverse weather conditions. This continuation of the Taxiway W Rehabilitation project underscores Oakland International Airport's commitment to maintaining a state-of-the-art facility that meets the evolving needs of its passengers and airline partners.
