NY Faces Biggest Snow in 2 Years: Expect NE Flight Delays/Cancellations

Destinations & Tourism

NYC braces for major snowstorm with 8" of snow & 40mph winds, affecting flights & commutes.

New York is on high alert for a significant snowstorm anticipated to hit on Tuesday morning, potentially bringing up to eight inches of snow along with winds up to 40 miles per hour.

This storm, the largest to approach New York in two years, is forecasted to coincide with the morning commute, posing risks to both ground and air transportation. Fox 5 has indicated possible disruptions to train and flight schedules, including delays and cancellations.

Air travel through LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport is expected to face interruptions. Additionally, NBC News reports that airports in Philadelphia and Boston may also experience flight delays or cancellations due to the storm's impact.

The weather event is predicted to begin as rain overnight before transitioning to snow in the morning, with snowfall rates potentially reaching two inches per hour. The snowfall is expected to diminish by late afternoon, as noted by National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey, who also warned of possible gusty winds and reduced visibility on roads.

A snow accumulation surpassing 7.3 inches in Central Park would mark the highest since January 2022, with certain areas north and west of New York City possibly receiving up to a foot of snow. Visibility could drop to less than half a mile during the storm's peak.

For updates on the status of LaGuardia, Newark, and JFK airports, travelers are advised to consult the FAA's website.
