New railway transport agreement signed in the Horn of Africa

News

Ethiopia and Djibouti have recently closed an immigration and customs deal, in order to boost transport service between the two states.

The immigration and custom treaty was created by authorities aiming to accelerate the Ethiop-Djibouti railway transport service, set to open for constant service until the end of the month.

The agreement was signed on October 30th, 2017 by the representatives of the minsters of transport in the two African countries. The deal was sealed on Djiboutian territory.

While the agreement is seen as an excellent opportunity for the local development of the railway transport service, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport, Ahmed Shide also explained how the advances could boost travel quality for the passengers moving between the two countries, as well as decrease the period of time associated with border document controls.

The new ground transportation system is set to connect Ethiopia to Djibouti via an electrified double-track railway, the first one in the Sub-Saharan Africa.

The service will start functioning this November.
