Munich Airport to Open New Terminal 1 Pier on April 13
Munich Airport has announced the grand opening of its new Terminal 1 Pier, scheduled for 13 April 2026. The development marks a significant milestone in the airport’s ongoing infrastructure expansion, increasing capacity and elevating passenger services.
The new pier is designed to strengthen the airport’s ability to handle non-Schengen traffic by adding space for up to six million additional passengers per year. The facility spans approximately 95,000 square metres and extends roughly 360 metres into the west apron, integrating with the existing Terminal 1 Arrivals Module B.
Fully financed from the airport’s own resources, the €665 million project reflects Munich Airport’s long-term infrastructure strategy. According to airport leadership, the pier is intended to set new standards in quality, efficiency and passenger comfort, while supporting future growth and the region’s attractiveness as a business and travel hub.
The multi-level facility is equipped to accommodate a mix of aircraft types, with flexible stand configurations enabling simultaneous handling of up to 12 short- and medium-haul or six wide-body aircraft. New amenities include centralised security screening with advanced CT scanners, expanded waiting areas, modern retail and dining options, and dedicated relaxation zones.
Two exclusive lounges will be part of the pier’s offerings: a 1,200 m² Airport Lounge World, operated by Munich Airport with apron and Alpine views, and a dedicated premium lounge operated by Emirates for its passengers.
Extensive trial operations involving more than 1,500 test passengers have already been conducted to ensure smooth operations and readiness for service. From 21 April 2026, around 40 airlines serving non-Schengen destinations are expected to transition their flights to the new pier, consolidating international departures and arrivals under the updated infrastructure.
The Terminal 1 Pier’s opening is part of Munich Airport’s broader strategy to expand its role as a key European aviation hub, enhance passenger experience and meet increasing demand for international travel.
