Munich Airport's New Terminal 1 Pier Set to Open in 2026

The expansion of Terminal 1 at Munich Airport is progressing smoothly, with the new pier expected to open in the first half of 2026. This state-of-the-art extension will provide increased capacity and upgraded facilities, setting new standards in efficiency and comfort for passengers traveling to non-Schengen destinations.
Enhancing Capacity and Comfort
The new pier, covering an area of 95,000 square meters, will accommodate up to six million passengers annually, which is comparable to the total passenger volume of airports such as Hanover. At 360 meters long, the expansion will allow the airport to handle up to 12 smaller aircraft or six wide-body aircraft simultaneously. The expansion will provide enhanced services for passengers flying with airlines like American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways.
Modern Facilities for a Premium Experience
The new terminal pier will feature cutting-edge check-in areas, equipped with centralized security checks and the latest CT technology for faster and more efficient processing. Passengers can also expect spacious waiting areas, a variety of commercial spaces, top-tier culinary offerings, and dedicated relaxation zones. These enhancements aim to improve the overall passenger experience, combining efficiency with comfort.
Investment and Timeline
The €665 million expansion project is on track, with several devices for passenger and aircraft handling already installed. Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing progress: “It is impressive to see how the Terminal 1 concourse is gradually taking shape. We are not only creating additional capacity but also a new level of quality and comfort for our passengers.”
Following a trial period in the coming months, the new pier is expected to officially open in the first half of 2026, making it one of the most modern and efficient terminals for non-Schengen flights in Europe.
This new expansion at Munich Airport is set to further elevate the airport’s status as a leading hub in Europe, offering passengers modern facilities and enhanced travel experiences while boosting capacity for international flights.
