Munich Airport achieves Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation for first time
Munich Airport has achieved Level 4 certification in the internationally recognized Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program for the first time, highlighting its progress in reducing emissions and aligning with global climate targets.
The certification, awarded by ACI Europe, confirms that the airport has aligned its carbon management strategy with the goals of the Paris Agreement. More than 650 airports worldwide participate in the ACA program, which evaluates climate performance across five levels.
Level 4 requires airports to set absolute reduction targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, implement a long-term carbon management plan and demonstrate measurable progress in reducing Scope 3 emissions. It also requires active collaboration with airlines, ground handlers and other partners operating at the airport.
Munich Airport said it has already implemented several hundred measures to reduce emissions, including expanding renewable energy use, electrifying its vehicle fleet and supporting the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels.
The airport is also investing in further sustainability initiatives, such as increasing solar power capacity, transitioning infrastructure to climate-friendly technologies and converting lighting systems to LED.
In addition, Munich Airport recently opened Bavaria’s largest public EV charging station and signed a power agreement for 40 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually from a new offshore wind farm in the North Sea, expected to be operational by 2027.
The airport aims to achieve net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2035 as part of its long-term climate strategy.
