Tourists aiming to spend their holidays to Sicily should learn the latest information on what traveling in the area implies.

After months of minor activity, Etna has finally erupted again a few days ago, on 27th of February. As the volcano spread its lava and hot ash into the region, people are asking if traveling to Sicily for leisure or business is safe regarding the current conditions.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), increased vigilance is necessary when visiting the area. There is no advisory against Sicily, yet tourists need to know the risk they expose themselves to, if in the location. Fortunately, the warnings are relaxed.

“Mount Etna has been erupting with increasing frequency sending plumes of ash into the air. There are currently no restrictions on air traffic nor indeed movement in these areas at this time. At this time there is no obvious reason to alter travel plans,” declared Frank Brehany, from Holiday Travel Watch.

If willing to travel to that side of Italy, holidaymakers should update their information from the FCO and Italian Protezione Civile websites. Similarly, tourists should also check with their travel agency for any changes in the scheduled travel plans. Nevertheless, travel insurance as well as a list with the European emergency numbers are a must for those visiting the area.

“You will be able to make sure that you are not only covered by your policy but that your insurer knows exactly where you will be in the event that the situation deteriorates," Brehany concluded.

Currently, the volcano is closely monitored by the Italian Protezione Civile, under the yellow warning sign for “potential state of imbalance”.
