Milan Bergamo Opens New Departures Terminal
Milan Bergamo Airport has officially opened its new departures terminal, completing expansion works launched in March 2024. The project represents a €55 million investment by airport operator SACBO—€41m for infrastructure and €14m for next-generation X-ray screening technology—and forms part of a wider €300 million development plan underway since 2020.
The inauguration ceremony on 25 November was attended by civil, military and religious authorities, as well as ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma and Assaeroporti President Carlo Borgomeo. SACBO President Giovanni Sanga opened the event.
The new first-floor departures area spans 7,500 sqm and includes 14 security lanes equipped with advanced CT scanners that allow passengers to keep liquids (up to 2 litres per container) and electronics inside their bags. One dedicated lane serves passengers with reduced mobility, families with young children and fast-track users. Access is managed via nine boarding-pass readers.
On the ground floor, the check-in hall has been expanded by 4,300 sqm, now offering 30 additional self check-in stations for a total of 64, along with doubled space for the baggage handling system. The extra-Schengen departures zone has also grown by 840 sqm, adding two new boarding gates.
New technologies are a central feature of the terminal upgrade. An AI-based presence detection system monitors passenger flow in real time to improve efficiency. The newly built upper level houses an expanded duty-free area managed by Avolta, adding to the airport’s growing retail and food-and-beverage offering.
The new departures terminal marks a major milestone in Milan Bergamo’s long-term development, enhancing capacity, passenger experience and operational efficiency.
