Manchester to Shanghai: New Direct Flights Set to Boost Northern Economy

Airlines & Airports

Manchester Airport announces a new direct flight service to Shanghai with Juneyao Air, set to enhance economic, cultural connections and provide direct access to China's financial capital from the North.

Manchester Airport is set to launch a new direct flight service to Shanghai, operated by Juneyao Air, starting 1 July. This service, running three times a week, represents the first-ever direct connection from the North of England to China’s financial heart, Shanghai, on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This initiative is lauded by regional leaders and business communities as a significant boost to the Northern economy, fostering stronger ties with China, and offering direct links for tourism, trade, and the Chinese community in the North.

The selection of Manchester as Juneyao Air's first UK destination emphasizes the airport's unique position as the only English airport outside London offering a direct service to mainland China. With approximately 185,000 people from the North traveling indirectly to Shanghai each year, this new route is expected to open up vast opportunities for trade and investment, further stimulating tourism and providing convenient travel options for the extensive Chinese student population in the region.

Manchester Airport managing director Chris Woodroofe highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the new route, noting its potential to facilitate cultural exchanges, business opportunities, and easier access for the Chinese community in the North to connect with family and friends. This route also aims to attract visitors to the North's cultural, sports scenes, and natural beauty, including the Lakes, the Peak District, and the Yorkshire Dales.

Juneyao Air Chairman Mr. Wang Junjin expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Manchester Airport and the anticipated economic and social exchanges the Shanghai-Manchester route will foster between China and the UK. Originally announced in late 2019 but delayed due to the pandemic, the resumption of this route marks a significant step in Juneyao Air's internationalization strategy.

Manchester, with its rich Chinese heritage and as a hub for one of the UK's largest Chinese communities, stands to benefit significantly from this direct connection. The route also complements existing services to Beijing, enhancing the North's appeal as a tourist destination for Chinese visitors. The anticipated economic impact mirrors the success of the Manchester-Beijing route launched in 2016, which saw a notable increase in exports and investment inquiries from China.

This new direct service to Shanghai is poised to further Manchester Airport's role as the UK’s global gateway in the North, expanding its offering of over 200 destinations and reinforcing its economic and cultural ties with China.
