Manchester–Mumbai Flights Increase as Demand Surges

Just three months after launching its first-ever European route between Manchester and Mumbai, IndiGo is expanding the service due to strong demand. From today (Monday, 22 September), the popular route increases from three to four weekly flights, offering more options for travellers and driving even greater economic benefits across the North of England.
IndiGo’s non-stop Manchester–Mumbai connection is the only direct service between the North of England and India’s financial capital. Thousands of passengers have already used the service since its July debut, highlighting the significant demand for direct links between the two regions.
The route has been widely welcomed by business leaders, government officials, and community organisations. Research by Metro-Dynamics forecasts the connection could generate over £32 million in regional exports and deliver an annual economic uplift of £12 million. An estimated 250 new jobs are also expected to be supported through direct and indirect employment.
Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said:
“Few routes show our commitment to global connectivity better than IndiGo’s direct link to Mumbai. This expansion confirms what we already knew — that this route is vital for business, diaspora, and tourism alike.”
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers added:
“The Manchester–Mumbai service marked our entry into Europe, and we’ve been thrilled by the customer response. Expanding the route is a natural next step, and we look forward to growing further.”
The development has also been praised by India’s Consul General in Manchester, Vishakha Yaduvanshi, who noted its importance for trade, education, and community ties. The route also supports India–UK relations as both countries move toward deeper collaboration through the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).
Jo Ahmed, co-chair of the Manchester India Partnership, said:
“The extra frequency is more than a flight — it’s a symbol of growing ties and shared opportunity between Manchester and India.”
Operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the service offers complimentary hot meals and a choice between Economy and IndiGoStretch, a roomier service tailored to business travellers.
Mumbai, India’s financial capital and home to the Bollywood film industry, is a global hub for business and culture. IndiGo, India’s largest airline, served over 118 million passengers last year and flies to over 130 destinations worldwide.
