Manchester Airport Begins Terminal 3 Revamp

Manchester Airport has officially begun work on a major upgrade to Terminal 3, part of its broader £1.3 billion transformation plan. The revamp includes a 40% increase in seating, new food and retail outlets, enhanced security systems, and a modern new entrance with expanded space and amenities.
The first new facility—a 469-seat sports bar called Sporting Chance—is expected to open to passengers early next year. With airfield views and live sports on screen, it will offer a relaxed setting before boarding. Another confirmed addition is Terracotta, an Italian-themed restaurant. Both venues will be operated by HMSHost UK, part of the Avolta group.
The upgrade comes as Manchester Airport’s 10-year Terminal 2 rebuild nears completion, with the terminal now serving over 70% of the airport’s passengers. Once Terminal 2 is fully operational later this year, Terminal 1 will be closed, freeing up space for the Terminal 3 expansion.
Managing Director Chris Woodroofe commented:
“With Terminal 2 almost complete, we’re turning our attention to Terminal 3. This is about delivering a better experience across the board. Passengers will start to see real improvements from early next year.”
Highlights of the Terminal 2 Transformation:
-
More than 30 million passengers have already passed through the Terminal 2 extension since its 2021 opening
-
New check-in areas, security hall, and a departure lounge with shops including LEGO®, Rituals, Pandora, and Joe & The Juice
-
Upcoming openings include Chanel, Fever Tree Bar, Grindsmith by WHSmith, and the Great Northern Market food court
-
13 new aircraft stands and boarding gates under construction
-
A chandelier installation connecting security to the lounge, inspired by Terminal 1’s iconic 1980s chandeliers
The transformation has already earned international acclaim, with the extension winning a Prix Versailles award for architectural design.
