Malawi Will No Longer Be Served By South African Airways

News

30th of November marks the beginning of the suspension of operations to Malawi by SAA.

Due to the current economic difficulties that have been occurring in Malawi, South African Airways has decided to cease its service to Malawi (both in Lilongwe and Blantyre).

Before making the tough choice to discontinue its route to Malawi, SAA noted in an industry statement that it was carefully watching the situation of the large depreciation of the Malawian Kwacha, severe foreign currency deficits, as well as the increase of blocked money. The analysis was conducted before the airline made the difficult choice to stop its route to Malawi. As a result, beginning on Thursday, November 30th, 2023, the suspension of services to Malawi will take effect automatically.

Professor John Lamola, the Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways, has declared that the decision to terminate the route is an input in risk management that has been thoroughly studied as a reaction to the present economic issues that Malawi is facing.

Nevertheless, this change should not be taken as a step back from the airline's dedication to serve the people of Malawi and establishing economic linkages between South Africa and Malawi. Rather because of being a small but expanding airline, the new SAA management cannot endorse routes that will not be financially viable.

Despite the difficult times, the airline underlined its gratitude to its consumers for their continuous support and loyalty. The company places a high importance on its connection with the Malawian market and in the future, it intends to keep a careful eye on the issue. In addition, Lamola said that the company will remain open to the possibility of restarting the route to Malawi as soon as the circumstances supports conducting financially effective operations from this corridor.

The South African Airways expressed its apologies for any disruption that this may create and reaffirmed its gratitude to clients for their patience and continuous support.
