Major Renovation of Schiphol Bus Station to Enhance Accessibility

Airlines & Airports

Schiphol's bus station renovation aims to significantly improve accessibility with a new, large covered platform, additional stairways for bus-train transfers, and expanded bicycle parking by 2027.

Schiphol Airport's bus station is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation aimed at significantly enhancing public transport accessibility. Scheduled for completion by 2027, the upgrade will replace current bus stops with a spacious, covered island platform, boasting 20 bus stops to accommodate more buses and provide ample waiting space for travelers. The renovation is designed to facilitate smoother transfers between bus services and train platforms, featuring three new stairways for direct access, along with the installation of gates for convenient check-in and check-out.

A notable addition to the renovation is the construction of a new bicycle parking facility, capable of housing around 500 bikes, catering to both travelers and airport employees. This development reflects a broader commitment to promoting sustainable transport options and improving overall accessibility to the airport.

The renovation process will commence in May 2024 with preliminary work, including the establishment of a temporary bicycle shed and the laying of essential cables and pipes. By October 2024, the project will progress to the bus station itself, undergoing phased construction to minimize disruption. During this period, bus services will continue to operate, albeit from temporarily relocated stops, with adjusted signage and information to guide travelers effectively.

This significant overhaul is part of the Multimodal Hub Schiphol (MHS) project, extending beyond the bus station to include updates to lifts, escalators, and stairways linking Schiphol Plaza with train platforms. Additionally, the project introduces a new arrival passage to accommodate crew transport, taxi apps, and courier services, thereby facilitating the bus station's renovation. The MHS project is a collaborative effort aimed at modernizing the airport's transport facilities, which have seen substantial increases in public transport usage since their initial construction in the 1990s. The initiative underscores Schiphol's dedication to enhancing the travel experience through improved infrastructure and capacity.
