Lufthansa unveils employee-designed aircraft for 100th anniversary
Lufthansa has introduced a special Airbus A321neo featuring a unique livery designed by its own employees, as part of celebrations marking the airline’s 100th anniversary in 2026.
Under the theme “Made by many. Remembered by all,” the aircraft showcases personal stories and illustrations contributed by staff across the Lufthansa Group, highlighting the people behind the airline’s history.
Employees were invited to submit their ideas via the company’s intranet, with a jury selecting the best contributions before a final vote determined the winning designs. Twelve selected motifs have been incorporated into the aircraft, which carries the name “Hamm.”
The designs reflect a mix of historical milestones and personal experiences. Among them are references to key moments such as the first inter-German flight in 1989, as well as individual stories like two flight attendants who met during a layover in Vancouver. Another motif created by Lufthansa Technik employees symbolizes teamwork through interlocking hands.
The artwork is integrated into Lufthansa’s anniversary livery, featuring the airline’s signature oversized crane design across the fuselage. Each motif is accompanied by a QR code, allowing passengers to learn more about the stories behind the images.
Additional employee contributions will be added throughout the year, making the aircraft a dynamic tribute to Lufthansa’s workforce.
The A321neo joins a growing fleet of anniversary-themed aircraft, including models such as the Airbus A350, A380, Boeing 747-8 and 787-9, all featuring the special centenary design.
The initiative highlights Lufthansa’s focus on celebrating its employees and their role in shaping the airline over the past century.
