London Gatwick Posts Strong H1, Awaits Runway Decision

Airlines & Airports

London Gatwick Airport reported strong operational and financial results for the first half of 2025, with 20 million passengers served, improved on-time performance, and all service standards met. The announcement comes weeks before a government decision on its £2.2 billion Northern Runway plan, which could create 14,000 jobs and add £1 billion annually to the UK economy.

evenue rose to £491 million, with profit at £129 million and EBITDA at £262 million. Punctuality improved to 75%, supported by collaboration with airlines and National Air Traffic Services. Security efficiency also increased, with 98% of passengers clearing checks in under five minutes. The airport earned the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s top rating for special assistance services.

Recent investments include a £7 million refurbishment of the South Terminal, a new 3,000-space car park at the North Terminal, and a £60 million upgrade to security screening systems. Gatwick also extended its regulatory commitments with the CAA until March 2029, providing stability for airlines and passengers.

The airport now hosts 58 airlines, more than ever before, with over 50 weekly long-haul flights to the Middle East, 39 to Africa, and 36 to China. It also leads the development of the UK’s first “airport economic zone,” aiming to boost trade and tourism.

On the innovation front, Gatwick became the first single-runway airport to implement NATS’ Intelligent Approach system, enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions. Sustainability efforts include a new renewable energy contract, a £250 million net zero programme, and the introduction of electric buses and vehicles across its fleet.

CEO Stewart Wingate said he remains “optimistic” about securing government approval for the Northern Runway by 27 October, calling the project “shovel-ready” and vital for long-term growth.
