JFK’s Airport First New Gates Will Open In 2026

News

JetBlue will expand its presence at JFK Airport by opening the first gates to Terminal 6 at JFK in 2026.

In 2026, the newest terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport, terminal 6, will open its doors. These gates will be used primarily by JetBlue Airways. Over the next two years, the remaining gates will be open. The project is expected to be completed by 2028. These gates will be available for foreign airlines. It is expected that the terminal will offer the best airport experience possible.

JFK's latest terminal

Terminal 6 isn't a completely new terminal for the airport. Terminal 6 was built in 2001, but it was demolished in 2011. The construction of the new terminal will start in the coming weeks. This $4.2 billion project will make the terminal one of the most beautiful in the world. Once completed, the terminal will be equipped with ten gates. Nine of them will be able to accommodate widebody planes.

The new terminal will be 10,000 square feet in size and include check-in counters and lounges for airline passengers, as well as shopping and dining areas. This terminal will connect directly to terminal 5, and will serve international flights. JetBlue will begin using the terminal once the first gates have been completed. JetBlue will share the terminal with other European airlines such as Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.

Robin Hayes (JetBlue Airways CEO) spoke out about the new services that it will offer through terminal 6. Hayes attributed the airline's success at JFK to its Northeast Alliance, which it shares with American Airlines. Hayes stated that:

"Thanks to our Northeast Alliance with American Airlines, Jetblue's presence in New York has never been greater and the new Terminal 6 project will only accelerate our growth in the years to come"

Future of JFK

The airport plans to expand its airport services and the new terminal is just one of many projects. The new terminal is seen by airport executives as an opportunity to increase capacity and set the stage for becoming one of the top airports worldwide. Rick Cotton, executive director of Port Authority, stated the following about the project:

"The financial close on a new Terminal 6 allows us to move forward with the final piece of our plan to transform JFK International Airport into one of the world's great global gateways. The $4.2 billion private investment in Terminal 6 by JFK Millennium Partners is a vote of confidence in our vision for a new JFK and in the future of our region."

Airport executives anticipate that construction will begin on the airport’s next major project, the re-creation, and expansion of terminal 1. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, and it will likely be completed in 2030. It is expected to cost $9.5 billion when it is complete.
