IndiGo Leaves 37 Passenger Bags Behind by Accident

News

In IndiGo, a national airline in India, forgot to check in the luggage of several domestic passengers during a recent incident at Hyderabad airport.

IndiGo issued a statement to confirm the mistake and stated that it was working towards relocating those bags. All airlines around the globe deal with lost baggage issues regularly. Passengers can now use technology to track their luggage during flight.

IndiGo failed to check in the bags of many passengers on a recent flight from Hyderabad. This happened on flight 6E 409 between Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam on February 9, 2009. The Airbus A321neo took flight at 13:38, and landed at Visakhapatnam at 14.28.

According to reports, the airline's ground staff was unaware of the problem until passengers notified them while they waited for their bags at airport. After waiting about an hour, the airline confirmed that the bag mix-up was true and promised to return the bags to affected passengers at home. IndiGo issued a statement saying:

We confirm that 37 bags were accidentally left behind on flight 6E 409 from Hyderabad to Vishakhapatnam. We will ensure that all bags reach their destination safely in Visakhapatnam. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to passengers.

IndiGo's most recent incident is not isolated. Mint published a report on August 20, 2022. It cited data from LocalCircles' study that revealed that 1 in 4 Indian fliers had lost their luggage within the past three years. One in three Indian passengers also experienced baggage damage from airlines.

This is not a problem that exists only in India. All airlines and all passengers deal with damaged or lost baggage. These incidents increased last year because airlines experienced a surge in traffic during peak travel times, but didn't have the necessary workforce to deal with them.
Aer Lingus still receives claims for lost baggage since the summer 2022. In July, the carrier informed an Oireachtas Transportation Committee in Ireland that it was handling up to 1,200 claims for missing baggage.

A family of five flew Air Canada on Christmas Day to Vancouver, and some of their ski bags were lost. They had to pay thousands more to rent equipment and purchase winter clothing. They finally found their bags at Vancouver Airport on their return to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Electronic tags are a popular way to track luggage during travel. There are many devices available now, from the Apple Air Tag to the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag, which provide all information about where their bags are located. This trend is not yet popular in India.
