How to Get Your Backcountry Camping Permit in GCNP Faster and Easier

News

The Grand Canyon National Park in the United States has moved to an online method for reserving extended back-country permits for the year to come.

The National Park Service has announced that beginning in 2024, visitors to Grand Canyon National Park who want to camp in the canyon's back-country will be able to book and pay for their camp-ground sites via Recreation.gov.

Campers who want to set up outside of designated areas on either the North or South Rims must complete out an application and deliver it to the Backcountry Information Center by fax, regular mail, or in person in order to get an official camping permission.

Park Superintendent Ed Keable said in a statement that there are "several key benefits" to using Recreation.gov to provide back-country passes, as the new booking method will make it easier for guests to organize their stay.

Back-country reservations may be made up to four months beforehand via the early access lottery once the web-based system becomes live.

Permits and lottery entries will each cost $10 beginning 2024. There is a $12 per person, per night fee for all places below the rim, and a $4 per person, per night fee for all sections above the rim.

Permit approval times, which the NPS claims may now take as much as a month, will also be drastically reduced thanks to the new online system.

Just over 12,500 camping permits were authorized by the NPS in the wilderness last year. Havasupai Gardens, Bright Angel, and Cottonwood Campgrounds all have limited availability for last-minute camping licenses issued by the park.
