Airlines & Airports

Heathrow Airport has reported a historic performance for 2025, with passenger numbers surpassing 84 million for the first time ever and achieving its busiest December on record with nearly 7.2 million travellers passing through the hub.

Highlights from the year included Heathrow’s busiest day ever on 1 August, when more than 270,000 passengers were handled, and the airport outperformed 2024 in nine out of twelve months. Heathrow also maintained its reputation for strong operations — finishing December as Europe’s most punctual hub, with over 97% of passengers waiting less than five minutes at security, and delivering improved baggage performance above 98% load rate.

Cargo operations were similarly robust, with 138,000 tonnes of freight moved in December alone and several new daily records set. Overall, cargo volume for the year grew compared to 2024, strengthening Heathrow’s role as the UK’s largest port by value for goods and mail.

Retail figures also reflected strong traveller engagement — during the festive season, items were sold at World Duty Free roughly every 5.5 seconds.

Looking ahead, Heathrow says it is preparing for another record-breaking year in 2026 and plans to invest more than £1.3 billion to further enhance customer experience and service delivery.

Heathrow’s Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Woldbye, highlighted the strength of demand and service performance, and emphasised the importance of continued support for expansion and improved regulatory frameworks to unlock further connectivity and economic growth for the UK.
