Finavia Opens Expanded Departures Hall at Rovaniemi Airport

Airlines & Airports

Finavia has officially completed the expansion of the departures hall at Rovaniemi Airport, with the new facilities opening to passengers on 28 October 2025. The €3 million project enhances the airport’s capacity and passenger experience, as Rovaniemi continues to establish itself as a key international gateway to Finnish Lapland.

The expansion adds nearly 1,000 square metres to the departures area, introducing more natural light and space for departing passengers. It’s part of a broader €5.5 million investment in Rovaniemi Airport in 2025, aimed at meeting the demands of record passenger growth — nearly 948,000 travellers used the airport in 2024, a 30% increase from the previous year.

Henri Hansson, Finavia’s Senior Vice President of Airport Network, praised the timely and on-budget delivery:

“The expansion will significantly improve the customer experience for departing passengers. With the new facilities now open, we warmly welcome all travellers to Rovaniemi Airport.”

The investment also supports improved ground transport arrangements, with designated zones for taxis, buses, and private vehicles being introduced. These upgrades will be completed through 2026, easing traffic congestion and streamlining drop-offs and pickups.

Finavia emphasized sustainability throughout the planning and construction phases. An energy simulation was conducted to optimise efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, contributing to the airport’s environmental goals. Rovaniemi Airport, which was awarded Finavia’s "Airport of the Year 2024," achieved net zero carbon emissions in 2024 and holds Visit Finland’s sustainable travel certificate.

Over the past decade, Finavia has invested over €100 million in Lapland’s airports. At Rovaniemi alone, previous developments under the 2018–2020 programme included terminal expansions and new services. In 2025, further improvements included €1.3 million for ground transport infrastructure and €1.2 million for runway systems and a de-icing station.

These projects aim to support the region’s fast-growing tourism sector and ensure a high-quality travel experience for the increasing number of visitors to Lapland.
