Emirates Installs Starlink Wi-Fi on Its First A380

Technology

Emirates has completed the installation of Starlink satellite Wi-Fi on its first Airbus A380, marking a significant leap in onboard connectivity for what remains one of aviation's most iconic aircraft.

The retrofitted A380 returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification work carried out in Newquay, UK. The upgrade is striking in scale: where early internet systems on the A380 offered less than 1 Mbps of total bandwidth across the aircraft, three Starlink antennas now deliver more than 2 Gbps — a thousand-fold improvement. Emirates describes the result as a "better than at home" experience at 40,000 feet.

The service will be free for all passengers across every cabin class, with straightforward sign-up and access. Passengers will be able to stream, game, browse, and work throughout their flights on personal devices. Live TV streaming over Starlink is also planned, first on personal devices and eventually integrated into seatback screens.

Engineering the installation for the A380 came with its own set of challenges. As a double-decker aircraft with higher passenger capacity than the Boeing 777, the A380 required an additional antenna and extra wireless access points, along with optimised inter-deck integration to ensure consistent coverage throughout both floors of the cabin.

Starlink rollout across Emirates' wider fleet is already underway — 25 Boeing 777-300ERs are already equipped, and more than 650,000 passengers have flown on Starlink-enabled Emirates flights so far. Installations on additional A380s will now begin at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai, with the pace set to accelerate throughout 2026.

The Starlink upgrade is part of a broader and ambitious refurbishment programme. To date, 93 Emirates aircraft have been fully retrofitted with new Premium Economy cabins, enhanced Business Class, refreshed First Class suites, upgraded Economy interiors, and expanded entertainment systems offering over 6,500 channels.
