Dublin Airport Passenger Cap to Be Removed in 2026

Airlines & Airports

Dublin Airport has welcomed a decision by the Irish government to remove the passenger cap currently limiting the number of travellers that can pass through the airport. The cap will be lifted on 1 June 2026, ending operational restrictions that have constrained growth in recent years.

The cap, introduced in 2022, limited the number of passengers that Dublin Airport could handle annually as authorities managed infrastructure and noise concerns in surrounding communities. Its removal marks a significant shift that allows the airport to expand flight schedules, welcome more airlines and increase connectivity to global destinations.

The decision was confirmed in government announcements that highlight the cap’s impact on future airline services and economic growth. Dublin Airport’s operator, DAA (Dublin Airport Authority), said the change provides clarity and confidence for airlines, travellers and business partners as the airport prepares for increased demand in the post-pandemic travel environment.

Airport officials described the cap’s removal as an important milestone for Irish aviation, enabling more direct routes, enhanced connections to Europe and long-haul markets, and greater capacity during peak travel periods. The move is also expected to support tourism, trade and business ties by giving carriers flexibility to plan expanded schedules without regulatory constraints.

Dublin Airport has previously seen strong passenger growth, and the removal of the cap aligns with plans for continued investment in infrastructure, service improvements and operational resilience. The airport says it will continue engaging with communities and authorities on environmental and noise management as passenger volumes grow.

The decision is scheduled to take effect in early summer 2026, ahead of the busy peak travel season, offering airlines the opportunity to increase frequencies and introduce new services that respond to rising traveller demand.
