DHL Opens Major New Warehouse at Frankfurt Airport

DHL Global Forwarding has officially opened a new, state-of-the-art airfreight warehouse at Frankfurt Airport, centralizing its cargo operations and increasing handling capacity to 300,000 metric tons per year.
Located in CargoCity South near Gate 31, the 24,500-square-meter facility replaces three previous DHL sites at the airport. The move marks a significant step forward in Frankfurt’s goal to become a top-tier European airfreight hub.
The facility, designed and built by Fraport AG, includes 54 truck docks, flexible office space, and 210 vehicle parking spots—20 of which are equipped with EV charging stations. A two-megawatt rooftop solar system is also being installed to feed clean energy into the airport’s grid. The building is now undergoing certification for ESG compliance and gold status from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
"This is a milestone in Frankfurt Airport’s growth as a cargo hub," said Anke Giesen, Executive Director at Fraport AG. “The new DHL facility aligns with our CargoHub Masterplan to increase cargo volumes at FRA by 50%, reaching around 3 million metric tons annually.”
Fraport’s CargoHub Masterplan focuses on optimizing space, building new capacity, and driving digitization and process innovation to support long-term, sustainable growth.
