Chicago registers new record number of visitors in 2017

News

According to data released by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Choose Chicago, the city welcomed 55.2 million visitors last year only.

The figures sum up a 2.5 per cent increase when compared to 2016. The growth is equivalent to 1.4 million more people entering the city, just as the mayor’s goal, set two years ago.

“Tourism in Chicago means jobs throughout Chicago. By continuing to set new tourism records and bring millions more people to Chicago every year, we are generating economic opportunities that reach every Chicago neighborhood,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel commented.

As the city’s tourism industry was the engine for approximatively 146.500 jobs in the sector, the boost in 2017 generated another 22.000 work places.

Moreover, according to data from hotels, the segment of leisure visits in Chicago also grew by 6.3 per cent last year. The progress was more visible during the summer months, particularly from June until September, when visits increased significantly.

Summing up, hotel rooms demand in Chicago went high by 3.3 per cent during last year.

The record numbers are good news for the industry, as Chicago inaugurated five new hotels in 2017, while preparing for another eight to be opened in 2018.
