Canada’s airspace closed for Russian aircraft

“All of Canada is united in its outrage of President Putin’s aggression against Ukraine."
“In response, we have closed Canadian airspace to Russian-owned or operated aircraft. The Government of Canada condemns Russia’s aggressive actions and we will continue to take action to stand with Ukraine,” stated Omar Alghabra, the country’s Minister of Transport.
The decision was made last Sunday by Alghabra and Mélanie Joly, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs. As a consequence, all airspace is inaccessible for any Russian-owned or operated airliners indefinitely.
Mélanie Joly also commented:
“Canada will continue to do everything it can against the Russian regime’s aggression. We are united with our allies in our unwavering support to Ukraine and are working to bring this unprovoked war to an end.”
According to data from Transport Canada, Aeroflot was found to be in violation of the ban on the same day the restriction was decided. Flight 111 owned by the Russian airline travelling from Miami, Florida to Moscow will be reviewed and sanctioned.
“We will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action and other measures to prevent future violations,” declared Transport Canada’s spokesperson.
The measure comes after Russia has launched the invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February, in what is globally considered to be an aggression over the entire Europe. With the latest decision, Canada joins several countries in the EU which currently deny airspace access for all Russian fleet.
