Buckingham Palace hosts an exhibition dedicated to the Queen

News

The wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II, from her christening dress to that worn at the Diamond Jubilee, will be on display starting Saturday at Buckingham Palace in London, reports AFP. Under the name of "Fashioning a reign: 90 years of style", the exhibition presents 150 outfits and is just one of the events organized on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of British sovereignty.

The exhibition dedicated to the Queen’s wardrobe opens with some screen prints from 1985 of the Queen by Andy Warhol, as a symbol of her implication not only in the politics but also in culture. For the tourists to discover all the secrets of the exhibition there are five galleries 10 decades. There are sensible knee-length coats in bright colors, the ceremonial military uniforms and the hats that are to be discovered by those interested in the monarchy, fashion or history.

Among the exhibits there can be remarked some outfits that become history such as the pistachio green coat worn by the Queen with a dress matching the same color this year during the celebrations that have marked the 90 -year reign, or the amazing dress made of silk ivory embroidered with 10,000 pearls that the Queen chose for the Duke of Edinburgh’s wedding in 1947. Her wedding dress and coronation gown – both designed by Hartnell – are shown here together for the first time.

“Clothes are never allowed to get in the way of whatever it is she is there to do,” says Caroline de Guitaut, the curator of the show. “Both the hats and the color lend a sense of visibility. The hats, in particular, enable those around her to see her instantly.” More, the curator added that: “She realized it’s a unique tool in a female sovereign’s power that a male sovereign simply wouldn’t have,” says de Guitaut.
