British Airways Expands Long-Haul Network for Winter 2026 with New Routes to Melbourne and Colombo

Airlines & Airports

British Airways has announced a major expansion of its long-haul network for the winter 2026 season, introducing new routes to Melbourne in Australia and Colombo in Sri Lanka, alongside increased frequencies on several high-demand destinations.

The expansion represents a nine percent increase in the airline’s long-haul operations compared to winter 2025, as British Airways continues to strengthen its global leisure network.

Flights to Melbourne will begin on 9 January 2027, operating daily from London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur. The route is timed to coincide with major events such as the Australian Open and the Melbourne Grand Prix. Meanwhile, services to Colombo will launch on 23 October 2026, operating three times per week from London Gatwick during the winter season.

In addition to the new destinations, British Airways will increase capacity on several popular long-haul routes. These include additional flights to Cape Town, Tokyo Haneda, Barbados, Kingston, San José and key destinations in the United States such as Houston, Baltimore and New Orleans.

The airline will also expand its Caribbean offering, including a new daily service from London Gatwick to Barbados, as well as increased frequencies to St Lucia, Punta Cana and Kingston. Services to Delhi will continue at three flights per day.

Short-term capacity adjustments have also been introduced in response to geopolitical developments in the Middle East. British Airways recently added seven additional return flights to Bangkok and Singapore, providing more than 3,300 extra seats over a short period to meet increased demand.

At the same time, the airline has extended temporary suspensions on routes to several Middle Eastern destinations, with flights to Amman, Bahrain, Dubai and Tel Aviv cancelled until the end of May, and Doha suspended until 30 April.

British Airways said demand for alternative holiday destinations remains strong, with significant increases in searches for Caribbean and Indian Ocean destinations. The airline has also seen rising interest in Canary Islands routes and short-term travel demand.

The expansion is part of the airline’s broader strategy to offer more choice and flexibility to passengers while responding to changing travel patterns and global conditions.
