As Queen Elizabeth II passed away, here’s what to know if travelling in the UK

News

According to the government, following the unfortunate event, "there is no obligation on organizations to suspend business". Nevertheless, museums, restaurants and shops in the UK will probably work shorter hours during the mourning of the Queen, especially on the state funeral day on September 19. The National Gallery, the Royal Collection Trust attractions and Westminster Abbey will however be closed to tourists.

Major sports events have been cancelled or will be affected in some way, so if you have tickets it is best if you check with the organizers to see if the games will be rescheduled on a later date.

London's Hackney Carnival, the BBC Proms, as well as the official Pride celebrations in Glousterchire have also been suspended. Major concerts are still on, at least for the moment.

Officials also expect significant transport disruptions especially in London and Edinburgh. Traffic in the city centre will be restricted during the days to come. Train operations will also be impacted. However, airports and flights are expected to function as usual.

"We expect large crowds, which can pose risks to public safety," commented the government’s representatives.

Information on restrictions as well as on the ceremonies related to the Queen’s death will be continuously updated.

Queen Elizabeth's coffin will be moved from Balmoral Castle to the Palace of the Holyroodhouse and after to St Giles’ Cathedral. Thousands of people are expected to visit Edinburgh this weekend for the ceremonies. Next week, the coffin will be taken to Buckingham Palace and Westminster Hall, for more than half a million visitors expected to pay their final respects.

The funeral will probably be organised at Westminster Abbey on September 19.

As for now, Britons are bringing millions of flowers for their Queen at Hyde Park and the Green Park Floral Tribute Garden.

Meanwhile, the exact date for the coronation of King Charles is yet to be announced to the public.
