American Unveils Retro Livery for 100-Year Anniversary

As it approaches its 100th anniversary, American Airlines has unveiled a special Flagship® livery that pays tribute to the carrier’s legacy while looking ahead to the future of premium air travel.
The new design will debut in November 2025 on a Boeing 777-300ER (registration N735AT), one of the airline’s flagship long-haul aircraft. The livery revives the iconic orange lightning bolt motif first seen on the Douglas DC-3 nearly 90 years ago, now updated with American’s modern Silver Eagle® paint.
“American has thoughtfully chosen a design that evokes our rich history while looking ahead to our next 100 years,” said Ron DeFeo, Chief Communications Officer.
The aircraft has been named “Flagship DFW”, a nod to American’s largest hub and corporate home at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
Toward the rear of the aircraft, a roundel featuring an eagle connecting the world highlights American’s global reach, which now includes more than 350 destinations worldwide.
Upgraded Aircraft, Premium Experience
The retro-themed aircraft is part of a broader cabin refresh across the 777-300ER fleet, starting in 2026. The updated interior will feature:
-
70 Flagship Suite® business class seats with privacy doors, chaise lounges, and wireless charging
-
44 Premium Economy seats with wireless charging — a first for U.S. carriers
-
Enhanced Main Cabin, including 4K QLED screens, USB-C and AC power at every seat
These upgrades reflect American’s ongoing investment in a more modern, luxurious onboard experience, following the debut of its new interiors on the Boeing 787-9 earlier this year.
A Century in the Sky
American Airlines’ history dates back to 1926, and the centennial celebrations will continue through 2026 with special merchandise available via the American Airlines Brand Store. Offerings include vintage ads, centennial-branded items, and other collector’s pieces.
For a century, the “Flagship®” designation has represented the airline’s top-tier service — from the original coast-to-coast DC-3 flights to today’s long-haul international routes. The new livery and upgraded interiors serve as a visual and physical bridge between American’s storied past and its future.
