American Government Releases "Do Not Travel" Warning for Lebanon

News

The travel alert was issued due to increased security concerns after rocket, missile, and artillery engagements involving Israel and Hezbollah.

Due to the unpredictability of the political and military climate in Lebanon, the United States Department of State gave its approval for the voluntary and temporary evacuation of relatives of U.S. government employees as well as certain non-emergency staff from the United States Embassy in Beirut.

An explosion at a hospital in Gaza City, according to a representative for the Gaza Health Ministry, killed hundreds of people, sparking demonstrations in the West Bank and across the Middle East. Both Israeli and Palestinian authorities have placed the responsibility for the attack on the other side.

Israel's 11-day assault started after Hamas murdered 1,300 people and took over 200 hostages in an assault through southern Israeli villages on October 7. Before Tuesday's explosion, health officials in Gaza estimated that at least 3,000 people had perished as a result of the Israeli military's response.

Hamas, an Islamist party recognized as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States, has dominated the 45 km long (25 mi) enclave of Gaza, home to 2.3 million people, since 2006.
